take the lead

It seems the better I feel, the more adventure I like to attempt. This means that last Thursday I felt really great because I went swing dancing! I think the last time I went swing dancing was at a friend’s wedding in 2009. To add to the adventure, I went with a group of people I had just met that evening. Maybe that’s the best way to go dancing – go with people you’ve never met. Then if you’re really terrible you can choose not to go back. ha!

My swing dancing experience was a lot of fun and I believe I’ll go back and try it again with that same group. I did discover that I need some more lessons. However, when paired with a guy who could lead well I became a great follower. Actually, one of my dancing partners complimented me on my ability to follow. It’s easy to think of being a great follower as more of an insult than a compliment, at least here in the United States. We’re encouraged to be leaders, to stand out, to be original and unique.

As I think back to the great leaders I had that night on the dance floor, just a simple movement of their arm or the way they gripped my hand led me to the direction we were headed next. Following their lead led to spins, turns and steps that I might not have known I could’ve accomplished on my own.

This dance I’ve been doing with Jesus has had a slow rhythm the last couple years, but now the beat is picking up speed. I’m not quite sure where He is leading me next. I desire to be complimented on my ability to follow Him, not for my own glory, but because I love Him so much and don’t want to miss out on what He has planned: spins, turns and steps that I might not have known without His power, help and taking the lead in my life!

“I Am the light of the world. If you follow Me, you won’t have to walk in darkness, because you will have the Light that leads to life” (John 8:12, NLT).

It’s time to dance! Hope you’re having a great week!

  1. So nice to hear that you were able to get out and enjoy dancing! What a great lesson and illustration for following Christ as He leads us in the ultimate dance.
Praying for you as He leads!
