On Monday morning, my hostess had to leave early, but knew the water heater guy was coming between 8 and 11. So I was left in charge of letting him in, showing him where the water heater was, paying and giving him a tip. Whew! That’s a lot for one morning when you only know a little bit of German. I successfully buzzed him in. Yay! I let him in and showed him where the water heater was, but after he started working he started asking me some questions. That’s where it all got blurry. However, I think everything turned out OK and I paid him what I was told it would be and even tipped him. I’m sure he left with funny stories about me. 🙂 I wonder how many other workers’ lives I will touch with a bit of laughter from my lack of clear communication.
